Cat insurance will provide financial aid to you and your cat when illness strikes. But, when it comes to chronic conditions, one must understand their policy completely. Most people would think that if they pay premiums to a company for years, while their cat is healthy, then when the cat gets a chronic condition it should be covered for the rest of that cat's life. Unfortunately, most cat insurers excel in one department, and that department is denying claims. More specifically, in this particular discussion, denying claims for a chronic illness.

If your cat contracts a chronic condition one year, insurers will cover that illness the first year it occurs, however, they will attempt to tell you that in all subsequent years the condition is now considered a pre-existing condition. And they will then tell you that they don't cover pre-existing conditions. Pretty horrible. You pay premiums, and when you have a problem, they deny coverage. All you will get is a finger pointing to a line in the contract that is buried on page 20 in size 8 font that basically says you get no money. This practice is quite frustrating, and if you are a cat lover, it is more than frustrating, it will literally drive you mad.

There are ways to prevent these coverage gaps- as they like to call them, from leaving you uninsured for a serious chronic illness. Basically, you need to buy what is called continuing care coverage to ensure that a chronic condition will be covered each year after the condition first appears. This coverage will be added onto your monthly premium payment for a reasonable amount. The coverage will come to the rescue if your cat develops diabetes, allergies, or some other chronic condition. These conditions can usually be treated with medication, but the medication is expensive. If you buy the aforementioned coverage, however, you can be certain that your cat will get the treatment it needs for every year the disease persists.
